Refurbished PS5 Disc vs Digital: Check the Model Before You Buy

The cheapest refurbished PS5 is not necessarily the least expensive way to play the games you own. Before choosing Disc or Digital Edition, check your current library and the exact console model. That matters particularly if you plan to add a drive later.

Start with the games on your shelf

If you have physical games you intend to use, verify compatibility with the proposed console and confirm it has a suitable drive. If your library is digital, list the games and accounts you expect to access rather than treating a seller's installed software as part of your purchase.

PlayStation's disc instructions explain that a disc game is installed and that the disc must remain inserted when you play. A physical copy is not simply converted into a permanently disc-free purchase after installation.

Can you add a drive to any Digital Edition?

No. Sony's separate PS5 drive has a specific compatibility list. Its UK page identifies PS5 Pro and the specified slim Digital Edition model groups, including CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. It also requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console during setup.

Do not apply that accessory compatibility to the original Digital Edition merely because the words PS5 Digital appear in its name. Ask for the console's model identifier and match it to Sony's current instructions before buying a separate drive.

Compare the full purchase cost

For a compatible Digital console, add the price of the drive you intend to buy, any missing accessories and the games you need. Then compare that total with a disc-equipped alternative. Use current offers rather than assuming one route is always cheaper.

Our recommendation is to write down a realistic first-month basket. Include the console, necessary controller, cables and a small number of games. This prevents a low console price from hiding costs that appear immediately afterwards.

Storage is a separate consideration

Both the game library and the console's available storage matter. PlayStation explains that PS5 games held on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD to play. External USB capacity is not automatically equivalent to playable PS5 installation space.

Do not choose between Disc and Digital on the assumption that discs eliminate all installation space requirements. Check the games you intend to use and the particular console's storage configuration.

Refurbished listing checks

Confirm the model, whether a drive is present, controller quantity, included cables and any stand or feet supplied. Ask about any unclear damage or fault before ordering. A product photograph showing accessories does not replace the written contents of the listing.

Choose Pristine, Very Good, Good or Acceptable where offered according to cosmetic preference, but assess functionality separately. If disc use matters, test a suitable known-working disc after arrival as well as the controller and network connection.

Consider future game formats separately

As checked on 27 September 2026, Sony's UK disc-drive page states that newly released PlayStation games will be offered digitally only from January 2028, while earlier game discs remain playable. Check current release information before buying a drive specifically for future games. Its clearest value is access to compatible physical games already available.

Which route would we choose?

For someone with a physical library, we would prioritise a clearly identified disc-capable setup that supports the intended games. For a digital-only buyer, a Digital Edition can be sensible when the total price and specification fit.

If you are undecided, calculate the cost of preserving the option to use discs. Do not pay for flexibility you will never use, but do not assume it can be added to every model later.
