Buying a memory card for a Nintendo Switch is no longer just a question of capacity. The console generation determines which card standard you need, and a card that works for one Switch setup may not provide game storage on another.

Match the card to the console

Nintendo states that Switch 2 requires microSD Express for expanded game storage. An ordinary microSD card previously used in a Nintendo Switch cannot be used on Switch 2 to save or load digital games. Nintendo makes a limited exception for importing screenshots and videos from the older card.

For the original Nintendo Switch family, Nintendo's compatibility information allows ordinary microSD cards and microSD Express cards, with an Express card operating at the older system's supported speeds. Paying for Express does not make the original console perform like Switch 2.

Storage capacity is the second decision

Once you have the right standard, consider how you buy games. Look up the published storage requirements for the titles you actually want and allow room for updates and other content. Avoid estimates based on a fixed number of games: file sizes differ substantially.

A memory card is not your save-data backup

Nintendo explains that game save data on both Switch and Switch 2 is stored in system memory. It cannot simply be copied to the expansion card. Moving a card is therefore not a substitute for following the appropriate console and account transfer process.
