Buying a refurbished iPad Pro can be a way to access a high-quality display and capable tablet hardware for less than some newer alternatives. The useful comparison, however, is between the specific model, storage, display, Pencil and keyboard generation, condition and live price. This article revisits the iPad Pro choices discussed in 2025 and explains how to assess their remaining value without relying on expired offers.

Start with model year, size and chip

The iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation, 2021) uses Apple's M1 chip; the 11-inch (4th generation, 2022) uses M2. Apple also sold M1 and M2 12.9-inch models. The redesigned 11-inch and 13-inch M4 (2024) models have different cases and display technologies. Later 11-inch and 13-inch M5 (2025) models are a further generation.

A product labelled only “iPad Pro 11-inch” may refer to several incompatible accessories and software-support timelines. Check the year, processor and Apple model identifier in the listing, and confirm the screen size before ordering a case or keyboard.

LCD, mini-LED and OLED are not interchangeable

M1 and M2 11-inch iPad Pro models use a Liquid Retina LCD with ProMotion. The corresponding 12.9-inch models offer Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED displays. The M4 generation switched both 11-inch and 13-inch models to Ultra Retina XDR tandem OLED.

For detailed HDR editing, photo work and illustration, display characteristics may justify the higher price. For research, email, general note-taking and streaming, the extra cost may provide little practical benefit. Check brightness and screen-condition descriptions rather than assuming that “Pro” means the same panel on every generation.

Apple Pencil support by generation

The iPad Pro M1 and M2 generations discussed here support Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and compatible Apple Pencil (USB-C), not Apple Pencil Pro. The redesigned M4 and M5 models support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), not second-generation Pencil.

Apple Pencil Pro's squeeze, barrel-roll and haptic features are dependent on supported hardware and apps. Check Apple's Pencil compatibility page for the exact tablet. A refurbished iPad should not be assumed to include a Pencil unless its product listing expressly includes one.

Magic Keyboard and other accessories

There is no universal Magic Keyboard case for every iPad Pro. Older Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio versions support specific 11-inch or 12.9-inch generations; redesigned Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro models are made for the newer M4/M5 11-inch or 13-inch designs.

Check Apple's keyboard compatibility guide and the actual keyboard's model number. You may be able to use a compatible Bluetooth keyboard if an integrated keyboard case is unnecessary. Verify charging cables, adapter and included accessories separately.

Storage, memory and port requirements

The M1 and M2 iPad Pro generations offer several capacities depending on size and year, often beginning at 128GB. The M4 2024 iPad Pro starts at 256GB and offers 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB tiers. M4 configurations also differ by RAM and CPU core count across those tiers.

External SSDs can be helpful with compatible apps and USB-C devices, but external storage does not increase an iPad's built-in app-installation capacity. Check USB-C/Thunderbolt support on the actual model, app compatibility, external-display requirements and any hub or dock power needs.

Wi-Fi + Cellular and eSIM

Some models support mobile data in addition to Wi-Fi; the exact SIM support differs by generation. In particular, M4 iPad Pro Cellular models use eSIM without a physical SIM tray. Check whether your UK carrier supports the model, data plan and eSIM activation before paying for Cellular capability.

Confirm whether your work or school needs continuous mobile data or whether Wi-Fi and a compatible phone hotspot are sufficient. The cheapest option is not necessarily the best if a required connection is missing.

Refurbished inspection, battery and security

When comparing used tablets, check touchscreen operation, screen brightness and damage, Face ID where provided, speakers, cameras, Wi-Fi, charging, Apple Pencil pairing and Activation Lock status. Inspect any reported battery information and remember that a cosmetic grade describes appearance, not a promise of a factory-new battery.

Check that the exact iPadOS generation and your required apps are supported. Older devices may remain useful, but a low purchase price can be poor value if essential software stops working.

What a good deal looks like in 2026

Compare like-for-like products: exact generation, capacity, Wi-Fi or Cellular configuration, condition grade, included accessories and the final checkout price. A historic 2025 discount does not guarantee present savings.

Tech Market publishes a 12-month warranty subject to terms. Delivery choices and courier estimates depend on checkout eligibility. Read our M1 vs M2 vs M4 iPad Pro guide, iPad Air vs Pro, and compare currently listed refurbished iPads.
