iPad Pro 2025 Buyer’s Guide – Which Model Should You Choose?
Choosing an iPad Pro in 2025 meant comparing several generations rather than one interchangeable model. The 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro (M4, 2024) brought OLED displays and Apple Pencil Pro support; by late 2025, Apple had also introduced iPad Pro (M5). This archived guide explains the real differences between models, what accessories work and what to check when considering a refurbished iPad Pro now.
The 2025 model choice: 11-inch or 13-inch iPad Pro?
The 11-inch iPad Pro (M4) is comparatively compact for commuting, handwritten notes and using a tablet on the move. The 13-inch iPad Pro (M4) provides a larger canvas for illustration, editing and viewing documents side by side. Both have the Ultra Retina XDR tandem OLED display with ProMotion and are available in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular configurations.
A larger display is not always the better buy. The 13-inch model occupies more space and will cost more in many comparable listings; the 11-inch may be easier for everyday carrying. Check the actual size, weight and storage against your needs, not just the Pro designation.
A key correction: M4 storage starts at 256GB
The 2024 M4 iPad Pro was offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities for both 11-inch and 13-inch models. Claims that the M4 range begins at 128GB confuse it with earlier iPad Pro generations. Apple documents the capacity tiers in its 11-inch M4 specifications and 13-inch M4 specifications.
The M4 storage tier also affects memory and processor configuration: the 256GB and 512GB variants use 8GB RAM and a nine-core CPU, while the 1TB and 2TB variants have 16GB RAM and a ten-core CPU. These differences matter more for demanding work than for basic browsing or notes.
M1, M2, M4 and M5: do not mix generations
iPad Pro M1 (2021) and M2 (2022) may be sensible refurbished alternatives, especially for people who do not need a tandem OLED screen. Their display technology and hardware vary by size: M-series 11-inch models from those years use Liquid Retina LCD, while the larger 12.9-inch versions use Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED.
iPad Pro M4 (2024) changed both sizes to tandem OLED and redesigned the enclosure. The later M5 iPad Pro (2025) is a different generation. No statement from 2025 that M4 is the 'latest' remains current. Compare processor, display, storage, port type and the exact model year before buying.
Apple Pencil support: verify the exact model
The iPad Pro 11-inch M1 and M2 and corresponding 12.9-inch generations support Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C) where listed by Apple. They do not support Apple Pencil Pro.
The M4 and M5 iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch support Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); they do not pair with Apple Pencil (2nd generation). This is a model-specific hardware requirement, not something fixed by a newer iPadOS update. Use Apple's official Pencil compatibility list.
A refurbished iPad Pro does not automatically include a Pencil. Confirm the listing's 'What's in the Box' information before adding the accessory to your budget.
Magic Keyboard compatibility matters too
The redesigned Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro (M4 and M5) is intended for the compatible 11-inch or 13-inch M4/M5 devices. Older Magic Keyboard cases for the previous iPad Pro 11-inch or 12.9-inch body are not automatically compatible with M4/M5 models. The 13-inch and older 12.9-inch sizes should not be treated as interchangeable.
You can also consider a compatible Bluetooth keyboard if you do not need an integrated trackpad case. Check the exact accessory generation, size and connector before purchasing. See Apple's iPad keyboard compatibility guide.
Wi-Fi or Cellular, and battery condition
Wi-Fi + Cellular models can provide mobile data with supported UK networks, but require an eligible plan and regional compatibility. The M4 iPad Pro Cellular hardware uses eSIM rather than a physical nano-SIM tray; check your provider before paying for the Cellular upgrade.
Refurbished battery performance varies by usage and age. Review any available battery information, the grade and screen condition, charging and USB-C functionality, Face ID and Activation Lock status. A Pristine or Very Good cosmetic grade does not guarantee a factory-new battery.

Compare the same generation, storage, connectivity and cosmetic grade, including charging equipment and any Pencil or keyboard actually supplied. Historical promises about up-to-40% discounts or free next-day delivery do not prove what is available today.
