The Apple iPad (6th generation, 2018) in Space Grey is an older 9.7-inch tablet that may suit a tightly controlled budget. It uses the A10 Fusion chip, Touch ID and a Lightning connector. Before buying a refurbished model in the UK, the important questions are whether your apps still support its software, how much storage you need and whether you want Wi-Fi or mobile data. It is not the right choice for everyone in 2026.

What you get with the iPad 6 (2018)

Apple originally sold the sixth-generation iPad in 32GB and 128GB capacities, with both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular variants. Its 9.7-inch Retina display can still be useful for reading, viewing compatible websites, watching video where apps permit and writing notes.

The iPad 6 has a Lightning port and 3.5mm headphone socket. It does not have USB-C, 5G connectivity or the processing capabilities of newer Apple silicon iPads. Performance and battery life will depend on the age and condition of the individual refurbished device.

Important: iPadOS 17 is the final major version

Apple's compatibility information places iPad (6th generation) on the iPadOS 17 generation; Apple does not list it among the devices supported by iPadOS 18. It also cannot run the later major versions offered to supported newer iPads. That matters more than the tablet's appearance.

Some current school platforms, banking apps, games and streaming services may require newer iPadOS versions. Check the software requirements of the actual apps you need, especially if the device is for school or work. Do not assume that every app or future update will continue to run. Security and app availability should form part of your buying decision.

Apple's iPadOS 18 compatibility list gives an official reference.

32GB vs 128GB: choose storage carefully

32GB may be adequate for light browsing, occasional notes and streaming where sufficient free space remains. System files, updates and app caches use some of that capacity, leaving less storage than the advertised figure.

128GB is the more comfortable option for downloaded videos, school materials, documents, photos and larger apps. Storage cannot be upgraded internally, so check the exact capacity on the product listing instead of relying on a generic article headline.

Wi-Fi vs Wi-Fi + Cellular: what is the difference?

Wi-Fi model (A1893): connects through Wi-Fi networks and can use a compatible smartphone hotspot. It is sensible if the tablet will mainly stay at home or school.

Wi-Fi + Cellular model (A1954): adds supported 4G LTE data connectivity via a compatible nano-SIM and a separate carrier plan. It is not a 5G tablet, and compatibility with a particular UK network and plan should be checked before purchasing. The cellular edition can use Wi-Fi too. Neither model should be assumed to be in stock simply because the category is discussed here.

Apple's model identification guide confirms the model numbers.

Apple Pencil, keyboards and accessories

The sixth-generation iPad supports Apple Pencil (1st generation), which is sold separately unless an individual listing explicitly includes one. It does not work with Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C) or Apple Pencil Pro.

You can use certain compatible Bluetooth keyboards or keyboard cases, but this iPad does not support Apple's magnetically attached Magic Keyboard or Magic Keyboard Folio cases designed for newer models. Confirm case and screen-protector sizing for the 9.7-inch 2018 model rather than guessing from the name “iPad”.

For setup details see our iPad 6 storage, Pencil and keyboard guide and Apple's Pencil compatibility reference.

What to check on a refurbished iPad 6

Review the exact storage, Wi-Fi or Cellular variant, cosmetic grade and battery information supplied in the live product listing. Test or confirm the screen, Touch ID, charging port, speakers, Wi-Fi and, if relevant, SIM connectivity. Make sure the device is not locked to someone else's Apple Account or organisational management.

Tech Market's cosmetic condition grades describe wear and appearance; they do not guarantee a new battery. Read the condition guide and check included charging accessories before ordering.

Tech Market publishes a 12-month warranty for eligible products; read the warranty terms for exclusions. Free Standard Delivery and Next Day Delivery may be available depending on address, order and checkout selection; check the latest delivery options rather than assuming every order qualifies for free next-day service.

Is buying the iPad 6 worth it in 2026?

It can still make sense as a low-cost secondary tablet for basic, compatible tasks, especially if the 128GB version is reasonably priced and the intended apps work on iPadOS 17. It is a weaker choice for someone who needs the latest iPadOS, long-term app updates, demanding games or a primary device for university coursework.

Compare the price with newer supported iPads before deciding. A slightly more expensive device may provide better app longevity and a lower total cost over time. Read our iPad 6 buying assessment and browse current iPad 6 listings for actual availability and grades.
