Best iPhone XR Setup: Storage, Colours & Accessories
The iPhone XR is a 2018 model, so the most useful setup is one that balances practical everyday use with realistic expectations about its age. Start with account security, battery condition and app compatibility rather than accessories.
Check software support before transferring data
Apple's 2026 security release list places iPhone XR on the older iOS 18 security-update branch, not iOS 26. Some recent apps or new features may therefore require a newer iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Software Update, install the latest compatible update available, and check the App Store requirements for applications you rely on. Do not assume all apps will remain compatible indefinitely.
Inspect battery and set up charging
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and examine maximum capacity and any service notice. A used battery may deliver materially less runtime than a new XR. Try Lightning charging and a suitable Qi wireless pad, and check that the port is clean and undamaged. Keep Optimised Battery Charging enabled where available and review apps consuming power.
Move your data and secure the phone
Use Apple's Quick Start or a current encrypted computer/iCloud backup to migrate data, then confirm your photographs, contacts, messages and authenticator apps are present. Configure Face ID and a strong passcode, enable Find My, set automatic backups and check that the device is not linked to somebody else's Apple Account. If buying refurbished, test cameras, microphones, speakers, mobile reception and Wi-Fi before relying on it.
Choose storage and practical accessories
The XR originally came in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB versions. 64GB can feel restrictive with large app updates and photo libraries; 128GB may offer more breathing room, while 256GB suits substantial offline media. Storage cannot be expanded with a microSD card. A correctly sized XR case, screen protector, dependable Lightning cable and Qi charger are more useful than accessories promising unsupported MagSafe functionality.
Who should still consider an XR?
It may be adequate for light calls, messaging, web browsing and music when priced accordingly, but it is not our preferred option for years of future software support. If banking, work or school apps require newer iOS versions, compare a supported newer model instead. Buy only after checking current compatibility and the actual condition of the individual device.
