Activation Lock on a Refurbished iPhone or iPad: What to Check Before Setup

Before you judge a refurbished iPhone or iPad by its camera, screen or battery, make sure you can activate it with your own account. A device that still asks for a previous owner's Apple Account needs resolving before it becomes your everyday phone or tablet.

What Activation Lock does

Activation Lock is linked to Apple's Find My feature. It helps stop another person using a lost or stolen iPhone or iPad. On supported software, a protected device can show an iPhone Locked to Owner message; an iPad can also remain linked to its previous owner.

Apple advises buyers not to take ownership of a used device while Activation Lock remains enabled. Erasing local content is not, by itself, proof that the account association has been removed. Apple's official setup checks are linked below.

Three different issues buyers can confuse

A screen passcode controls access to a device that is already set up. Activation Lock concerns the account linked to the device. A network lock concerns which mobile network can be used. Do not accept an answer about one as proof that the others are resolved.

For a buyer, the practical distinction is simple: an unlocked network description is not a complete answer to an ownership prompt during setup. Likewise, reaching the Hello screen is only the beginning of your check, not a reason to stop checking.

What to do when the device arrives

Start setup on a trusted internet connection. Confirm that you can progress without entering a previous owner's account credentials. If an ownership prompt appears, photograph the message without exposing passwords or other personal information, and contact the seller with your order number.

Do not spend your first evening transferring photographs, downloading apps or buying accessories for a device whose activation status is unresolved. It is easier to deal with the issue while your original phone remains working and your data remains in place.

If setup instead displays an organisation's Remote Management screen, pause and ask the seller to resolve that separately. A former business or school configuration is a different issue from personal Activation Lock; it still needs a clear answer before you commit to using the device.

Who can resolve an ownership lock?

Apple provides legitimate removal steps for the account holder, including account-based removal in appropriate circumstances. It also offers an Activation Lock support route where proof-of-purchase documentation is available. Follow Apple's process rather than assuming any receipt will automatically be accepted.

As a buyer, your first contact should normally be the retailer that supplied the device. Do not ask a previous owner to send you their password, and do not provide your own account details to someone offering an unofficial bypass. You need the underlying ownership issue resolved, not a promise that a workaround will keep working.

Buying a device as a present

Allow time to check the order before the occasion. Decide in advance whether you will leave the device ready for the recipient to set up or help them activate it together. Avoid signing a gift into your own account simply to make its screen look ready.

Choose between Pristine, Very Good, Good and Acceptable according to appearance and budget, but assess account readiness separately. A clean casing cannot tell you whether setup will complete.
