The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max share more than their names. They have the same A19 Pro chip, the same generation of Pro cameras and the same essential iPhone features. The decision is largely about how big a phone you want to carry, how much battery headroom you need and whether that extra size is worth the refurbished price premium.

If you are comparing pre-owned iPhones in the UK, this guide separates the actual manufacturer specifications from the things that vary between individual refurbished devices: battery condition, cosmetic grade, storage, accessories and current price.

THE QUICK VERDICT

Best for most buyers: iPhone 17 Pro. It offers the core Pro experience in a smaller, lighter device that is easier to handle one-handed.

Best for big-screen use and battery: iPhone 17 Pro Max. Its 6.9-inch display and higher UK-rated video playback make it a better fit for long days, reading, editing and watching video.

Best refurbished value: whichever individual listing has the right condition, battery information and price. The Pro Max does not have an exclusive higher-grade rear camera system.

1. Size and comfort: the biggest everyday difference

A 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro is not a tiny phone, but it is easier to slip into a pocket, use on a commute and hold while taking photos. The Pro Max has a noticeably larger 6.9-inch screen. That extra space is genuinely useful for people who spend long periods reading, checking spreadsheets, watching videos, using maps or editing photographs directly on the phone.

There is also a practical weight difference: 231g for the Pro Max versus 204g for the Pro. That is a 27g increase, and the Max is wider and taller. Those numbers may seem modest on paper; in a case, with one-handed use, they can influence comfort more than a benchmark score.

Both displays are Super Retina XDR OLED with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and Always-On functionality. The Pro Max does not gain a different display technology simply because its screen is larger.

BUYER TIP

If you frequently use your phone one-handed, lean towards the Pro. If your phone is your primary screen for work, entertainment and travel, the Pro Max’s extra display space can be worth paying for.

2. Battery life: what the UK figures actually say

Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback for iPhone 17 Pro and up to 37 hours for iPhone 17 Pro Max in its UK technical specifications. That is a six-hour gap in the manufacturer’s local video-playback test, not six extra hours of guaranteed everyday use.

Apple also rates streamed-video playback at up to 28 hours for the Pro and 33 hours for the Pro Max. Actual results depend on screen brightness, network reception, apps, recording, age of the battery and the state of the particular refurbished device.

This matters especially when comparing two used phones. A Pro Max with a more worn battery is not automatically a better real-world battery purchase than a Pro with a healthier one. Check what the seller discloses and avoid treating a cosmetic condition grade as a battery-health figure.

Both models support fast wired charging and MagSafe. They do not have a meaningful charging-category advantage over one another simply because one is larger.

3. Cameras: do you get better photos from Pro Max?

No exclusive camera upgrade is listed for the Pro Max. Both iPhone 17 Pro models use Apple’s 48MP Pro Fusion rear camera system: a 48MP main camera, 48MP ultra-wide camera and 48MP telephoto camera. Both offer a 4x optical telephoto lens and an 8x optical-quality telephoto option enabled by the camera system. They also share the 18MP Center Stage front camera.

That is important when comparing refurbished prices. If your main objective is portrait photography, landscapes, family images, travel video or zoom, the smaller 17 Pro offers the same underlying camera specifications. The Pro Max gives you a bigger viewfinder, but not a separate higher-resolution sensor or an exclusive additional lens.

For serious video makers, both support demanding recording features, including ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2. Large files can require more storage, and advanced workflows may require compatible external accessories or apps.

BUYER TIP

Choose the phone with the right storage and condition, not the Max just because you assume its camera is better. Camera results can also depend on lighting, technique, settings and software.

4. Performance and gaming: the same A19 Pro foundation

The 17 Pro and Pro Max use the A19 Pro with a six-core CPU and six-core GPU. Both are designed for demanding apps, multitasking, creative work and advanced games. Neither model is an automatic winner because of the name “Max”.

A larger chassis can influence how a device behaves under sustained demanding use, but we have not performed controlled side-by-side thermal or frame-rate testing on these refurbished units. We therefore would not claim that one is definitively faster in your favourite game without reliable matched evidence.

For ordinary tasks—messaging, navigation, shopping, banking, browsing and video calls—either phone has far more than enough performance. Buy the size that feels right and the storage you need rather than paying extra for an unproven speed advantage.

5. Storage: 256GB versus 512GB, 1TB and 2TB

Both phones begin at 256GB and come in 512GB and 1TB versions. Only the Pro Max family offers a 2TB configuration in Apple’s published 2025 specification. That highest capacity is not automatically a reason for an everyday buyer to upgrade.

  • 256GB: a sensible starting point for many buyers using photos, apps, everyday video and a mix of streaming and downloads.
  • 512GB: useful if you keep a large photo library, download offline media, play sizeable games or record more 4K video.
  • 1TB or 2TB: specialist headroom for large video projects and very substantial local libraries. Check whether you truly need it before paying the premium.

Remember that iCloud can store files remotely but it does not physically increase the phone’s built-in storage. For a broader storage decision, see Tech Market’s iPhone storage guide.

6. Which one is better for work, travel and entertainment?

How you use your phone Start with Reason
One-handed use and smaller pockets 17 Pro 204g body; narrower and shorter
Commuting with navigation and messages 17 Pro More manageable for frequent handling
Reading documents and watching long videos 17 Pro Max Larger 6.9-inch viewing area
Long days away from a charger 17 Pro Max Higher UK manufacturer-rated battery figure; check battery condition
Photography and social content Either Same core rear and front camera specifications
Mobile filmmaking with heavy file storage Either, storage first Choose the storage configuration and accessories your workflow requires
Best value refurbished purchase Compare listings Condition, battery information, price and warranty matter more than the suffix

7. Refurbished buying: five checks before you decide

A clear purchase decision needs more than the model family. Two used phones of the same generation can differ in storage, cosmetic condition, warranty terms and how much battery wear they have experienced.

  • Correct model and storage: confirm the exact Pro or Pro Max model, capacity and colour shown on the listing.
  • Battery condition: check the specific battery information available; do not assume “Pristine” means a brand-new battery.
  • Repair history: when relevant, review Parts and Service History and ask about any disclosed replacement components. See the Tech Market repair-history guide.
  • Activation and network: confirm the device is unlocked, not Activation Locked and compatible with your carrier and SIM arrangement.
  • What is included: check charger/cable details, warranty cover, delivery terms and return conditions in the current listing.

Tech Market lists cosmetic grades such as Pristine, Very Good, Good and Acceptable. These grades describe appearance, not a uniform battery percentage. Buy the specific device, not a generic grade name. Read the complete refurbished-tech buying guide for a more detailed checklist.

8. SIM cards in the UK: check the regional model

Apple’s published UK iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max specifications describe support for a physical nano-SIM plus eSIM, alongside dual-eSIM functionality. However, devices originally supplied in certain other markets are eSIM-only, including the United States. A UK retail listing can also contain an imported device.

If you need to move an existing physical SIM immediately, ask the seller to confirm the exact handset’s model and SIM tray. If you are happy to use eSIM, check that your UK network supports your required service and transfer method. Do not assume every iPhone 17 Pro worldwide has exactly the same SIM setup.

Apple’s iPhone model identification guide is useful if you need to identify the region and hardware.

9. Is the larger refurbished Pro Max worth the extra money?

There is no universal price threshold because second-hand listings change. Instead, compare like for like: the same storage capacity, similar cosmetic grade, similar battery information and the same included accessories. A cheaper but more worn phone may not be the best deal; a better-condition Pro Max at a small premium may be a strong option for somebody who loves a large screen.

Here is a practical way to decide: if the Pro already fits your screen and battery needs, the extra spend could go towards a better grade, more storage, a protective case or another useful accessory. If you are consistently frustrated by small keyboards, frequent charging or cramped editing space, the Pro Max premium is more likely to deliver value you will notice every day.

THE VALUE RULE

The larger display and battery rating are real benefits. An exclusive better camera and clearly faster chip are not supported by Apple’s published comparison. Spend for the benefits that matter to you, not for the word “Max”.

10. Compare actual iPhone 17 stock at Tech Market

As at the preparation of this guide, Tech Market has listed refurbished examples of both devices in Deep Blue. These are examples to help you compare the same 256GB capacity; availability, prices and condition grades can change at any time.

iPhone 17 Pro vs 17 Pro Max: final verdict

Choose the iPhone 17 Pro if you want flagship-level performance and the complete Pro camera system in a phone that is easier to carry. For most people it is the more balanced size, especially if the refurbished saving is meaningful.

Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if the larger display and stronger manufacturer-rated battery life are advantages you will use every day. It is particularly compelling for people who rely on their phone as their primary work or entertainment screen.

Either way, choose the individual refurbished listing carefully. The best phone is not simply the largest model—it is the one whose features, battery condition, storage, price and after-sales terms fit your actual needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max camera better than the 17 Pro?

Apple lists the same three 48MP rear camera types and the same 18MP Center Stage front camera for both. The Max has a larger viewfinder, but not an exclusive additional telephoto camera.

Does the iPhone 17 Pro Max have a faster processor?

Both are specified with A19 Pro and the same six-core CPU and six-core GPU configuration. Real-world sustained behaviour depends on workload and conditions; we do not claim a measured speed advantage.

What is the battery difference in the UK?

Apple rates video playback at up to 31 hours for iPhone 17 Pro and up to 37 hours for iPhone 17 Pro Max in its UK specifications. Battery age and usage affect actual results.

Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max too heavy?

The Pro Max weighs 231g versus 204g for the Pro. Whether that is uncomfortable depends on your hands, case and usage. Compare sizes before paying for the larger device.

Can I use a physical SIM in a refurbished iPhone 17 Pro?

UK-specification models support nano-SIM and eSIM, but some international versions are eSIM-only. Check the exact unit and UK network compatibility before ordering.

Should I buy 256GB or 512GB?

256GB is a practical starting point for many people. Choose 512GB if you regularly keep large videos, games or offline files. The right answer depends on your own storage use and available refurbished price.

Is a refurbished iPhone 17 Pro Max worth it in 2026?

It can be, particularly if you want a large display and long rated battery endurance without buying the latest generation new. Evaluate the precise listing, price, condition, battery information and warranty first.
